Picking dewberries. Glad to share one of my favorite childhood memories with Spence.

Lost Oasis Cave Preserve
I accompanied Spencer's class on an amazing field trip yesterday to the Lost Oasis Cave Preserve. Check out these adorable preschool spelunkers all geared-up and ready to go:
That's half of Spencer's class above. We were in two groups since the cave couldn't accomodate all 8 Iguanodons at once. First, Ms. Kate from the Austin Nature and Science Center entered the cave, followed by Ms. Kelly. I stayed up top to help the kids get in, then I followed last. I wasn't so sure I was going to fit, but I squeezed through the opening...
I took a few pictures inside with my phone, but of course the quality is not great. You can at least get an idea of what we experienced.
I just love how Spencer and Rex are holding onto each other in the photo above. Such sweeties! We saw lots of cave crickets and even a frog. We had to crawl around a lot because the cave is pretty shallow. Definitely not for the claustrophobic folks out there!
When we were finished, we went on a nice hike with our director, Ms. Bonnie, while the other half of the class explored the cave. I can't believe our time at NWPS will end next week. I can hardly bear to think about it!

Geocaching...Finally!
Probably about two years ago I downloaded a geocaching app on my phone, and last weekend we finally tried it out. In case you're not familiar, geocaching is an activity where you use a GPS device (in this case, our iPhones) to located hidden treasures that other geocachers hide. When you find it, you can take something from it, leave something, or just sign a log book.
We headed out to the Barton Creek Greenbelt, of course, and followed our GPS coordinates to find our first geocache. It took some searching, but we found it. It's not about the cache itself - the search is the fun part.
We decided to search for another cache. I let the boys navigate up a steep cliff while I waited below. A little while later they returned after finding geocache #2. It turns out we could've gotten there a MUCH easier way, but we're always up for an adventure, right?
Oh, and we saw this guy while we were looking for our second cache... and to refresh your memory, the rhyme goes, "Red and yellow kill a fellow, red and black friend of Jack." Mr Coral Snake is quite poisonous, but since we were on his turf, we took a few pictures and were on our way. (Although Dave did touch him with a stick to try to get him to move away from the trail... he got a bit squirmy and we hot-footed it outta there!)
I think geocaching will definitely be a new Horridge hobby!

Up, Up and Away!
For the last several months, Spencer's preschool director, Ms. Bonnie, has been trying to organize an early morning hot air balloon event for the kids. But every time it was scheduled, the weather didn't cooperate and she would have to cancel. Well, last week the stars finally aligned, and we got to take a ride in a hot air balloon. We were safely tethered to the ground, so we rose about 30-40 feet and then made our descent.
The wind started shifting while Spencer, Dave and I were up, and we had a bit wilder ride than the previous families. And as it turned out, only one more family got to go up after us because of the changing conditions. I'm so glad we made the cut! It was a cool experience and just another in the long list of reasons Nature's Way Preschool is such a special place.

Easter, Part 2
After the farm picnic, we drove to San Antonio and stayed with Geep and Pop.
Luckily the Easter Bunny found us there, though Spencer was a little
surprised (disappointed) that he only left Spencer's basket outside on a
bench rather than hidden behind a tree or something like that. Also, Spencer woke up at the crack of dawn, which you can probably tell from the pics and video! I have a sneaking suspicion that the Easter Bunny barely made it by La Vista Drive in time...
There was also Geep and Pop's annual scavenger hunt to help Spencer find his basket from them. This year he graduated from picture clues to written clues that he read. Here's just one of the clues:
Then we had breakfast and got ready for church.
At church there was another egg hunt, then we had a nice lunch with Geep and Pop.
Funny: I didn't have Spencer try on his new pants since they were a brand/size he's worn before. Well, I could barely get those suckers buttoned! They were so tight - but he was a trooper, which was lucky because Mama didn't bring any other pants. :)
