Hanging at the Hangar Hotel

We drove to Fredericksburg yesterday to visit the Hangar Hotel. It's a 1940s-insipired hotel with a neat diner at the tiny airport in Fredericksburg. You can sit inside the diner and watch planes come and go. We thought Spencer would get a big kick out of this since he loves planes. It did not disappoint!

We had some yummy sweet treats, peeked inside the airplanes and checked out the hotel and officer's club. If it hadn't been 100 degrees we probably would've hung out a little longer. A fun outing!

P.S. Spencer has been telling people about the plane above. I thought he was calling it a "Tommy plane" but then I realized he was saying "timey plane" as in "old-timey plane." :)

How Does Your Garden Grow?

Today Spencer and I tried our luck at planting some seeds. We planted rosemary, zinnia and marigolds in pots and put some green beans in an egg carton to see if they will sprout. I've never had a green thumb and I don't even know if we did it right, but hopefully in a few weeks something will happen...at least it was a fun experiment and an excuse to play in dirt.

The Bluebonnet Sessions

We took some fun family pictures in the bluebonnets in April. Paw-Paw happened to be in Austin that weekend so he went with us. The photographer suggested he get in some of the pictures and we're so glad he agreed. Spencer enjoyed himself - he was being such a little ham. And we were worried he wouldn't cooperate! These are a couple of my favorites and the rest are in the April photo album.

Pickles and Drums

Just a few more recent quotes. Talking with Spencer is such a blast!
  • While driving down S. Lamar with the windows down: "What's that smell? Is it BACON?!"
  • "Ooooh! I like this water. It makes me... it makes me very thirsty."
  • Spencer (after they turned at a light): "Daddy, was the light still green?
    Dave: "Yes it sure was."
Spencer: Oh Daddy, you're so smart!"
  • "Uh, sure." This is a common response to questions. Very casual. :)
  • While pretending to talk on an old cell phone: "I need to order a cheese pizza. I need to order pickles and drums."
  • Responding when I asked if he wanted some water: "Ummmmm, I'm fine." (It's obvious he picks up on some of our common phrases.)
  • While building an aquarium out of cardboard bricks with Geep: "I'm working on it. I'm gonna be done in 30 minutes." (I actually just overheard this as I was typing this blog entry.)
  • When I was putting Spencer to bed the other night, he started telling me a story about a polar bear that went something like this: "There was a polar bear with sharp teeth, sharp eyes, sharp nose, sharp claws, sharp toenails. And there was a monster in the polar bear's room but he was just wearing a costume."
On a side note, monsters seem to be a hot topic lately - Spencer will tell me he doesn't want to go into a room because he saw a monster. He says it in kind of a fun way though - like it's a game. A couple of books we read a lot have monsters in them. I try to make sure he knows they are costumes or just pretend and of course not scary, but they are making an impression I guess.

And I will close with this sweet picture of my boys having breakfast while I was in Santa Monica. Love these guys!!

Play-Doh

We finally introduced Spencer to Play-Doh last week. Ahhh, that smell brings back memories! He had fun using the rolling pin and cookie cutters to make airplanes, trains and cars.

Happy Mother's Day

This Mother's Day will be bittersweet as I will be missing my mom terribly but also celebrating the gift of being Spencer's mommy. I am thankful for her example of selfless love and that she got to see me become a mother.
